Artist Marie Castiglione believes humor is the best medicine for life, and we couldn't agree more. Spaghetti & Meatballs is her line of "home-cooked" greeting cards — made with love and a pinch of sass. She hopes you get the same kind of warm fuzzy comfort from her cards that she gets from eating pasta. Yes, please!
We got to sit down with her recently to learn more about her inspiration for this amazing crop of cards.
How would you describe your style?
Minimal, sassy + pink.
What’s the weirdest occasion you’ve ever sent a card for?
Well, I don't know about the weirdest... but I used to be the go-to person in my office job to make cards for our bosses and coworkers. I used to spend hours and hours making insane popup cards or something cool for a colleague's birthday. I worked at Bloomingdale's as an art director for 10 years and made SO many cards in a decade!! I finally started saying to myself I should start selling these, and then enter Spaghetti & Meatballs!
What’s one of your most favorite cards you’ve ever received?
Ohhhh! I was going through a breakup and living in NYC and my sister sent me a card in the mail as a little pick me up. And to this day I still have it! I thought it was so sweet, sentimental, and a little bit of sunshine I needed :) It also inspired and forecasted the "Breakup Section" in my own line!
Where do you look for inspiration?
Honestly, I surround myself with funny people. And I think that's my biggest inspiration. My sister is a word genius and any time I have an idea for a card she's able to say what I'm thinking, but within 3-5 words and that's what's key for copywriting. Fast quick reads!! I also come from a big Italian family of 7 so it's full of lots of funny and crazy personalities. My circle of friends are all hot messes but keep me laughing! So I'd say it's the people around me, but when I look for inspiration elsewhere, I get a lot from travel, from funny memes, from breakups, from tipsy conversations out with my girlfriends, a new Drake song, pop culture, and anything that just has good vibes :)
What was your first concert?
Omg! Great question! TLC, and Destiny's Child opened up for them... when there were 4 members not 3 — so that is time telling! And I also went straight from school when I was in 6th grade, so I had to wear my St. Peter's uniform!!! I had a crush on the guy I was going with (but yes we had a chaperone) and there I was, at a TLC concert, in 6th grade, in my gym uniform!!
If you could be a cartoon character for a week, who would you be?
Well I don't know if this counts... but I would say the magic carpet from Aladdin so I could fly around and have a best friend that granted me free wishes! lol
